Foodie Brain Teasers

This blog needs some action! I will be doing more news and views on current hot topics and how I incorporate them into everyday living. In the mean time, here is something to chew on as I do a bit of blog work. Feel free to post your answers, and to challenge any responses! Have fun….

Q1. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?pear

Q2. Of all vegetables, only two continue to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

Q3. At holiday time you can buy pear brandy with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn’t been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

Q4. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

  1. The pears in the bottles are grown on bottle-pear trees. I have seen photographs.

The pears themselves are unexceptional, but the bottles are remarkably uniform and made of very clear, real glass. Talk about “green” packaging!

  2. q1 Strawberries
    q2 Tomatoes and Corn
q3 (I have seen this with cucumbers as well)
    q4 Watermelon

Trev and I brainstormed these together so I blame him if we are way off base 😉

  3. Frank, there’s no such thing as a bottle-pear tree, any more than there are spaghetti trees.Try again.

  4. Hope you had fun Steph & Trev – 1 correct answer and 1 honourable mention for beating the quiz master at her own game!
    q1 strawberries is right on.
q4 watermelon is an excellent answer but you can find watermelon chunks in packaged fruit salads sold in the refrigerated section of produce aisles. In Foodservice we used to get it from a company named Dessertcraft. Is it processed? I bet the manufacturer would say no but it likely contains sulphites or other freshening agents. However it is indeed FRESH and I’ve never seen it sold frozen so I grant you a correct – but there’s an obvious veggie too!
BTW I wonder what happens when you freeze watermelon? Does it thaw into slush? Wonder if it makes good ice cubes?
And you’re way off on q2. You’re looking for something that can grow from seeds but they don’t. Hint – they are both spring crops and they ‘spring’ up rather quickly. (There’s probably a third that grows in the Maritime provinces but it wasn’t mentioned in the original quiz.)

  5. Okay – time for the answers:
    1. Strawberries
    2. Asparagus & Rhubarb
    3. The bottles are attached to the tree buds so the fruit grows right inside. (Obvious and amazing!)
    4. Lettuce – – – and Watermelon (thanks to Steph & Trev’s brain power)
